Continuing Success!
Yes my quest to collect as much terrible, cheesy, cringe-worthy and amusing music continues. After a brief foray into the world of Dance Dance Revolution and it's various international incarnations I decided that it just wasn't bad enough, turning my eager eye (ear?) back towards the embarrassing video game tie-ins of the 90s. 1992 was obviously the go-to year with Tetris, Supermarioland and Supersonic, but there is more to be found buried in the depths of the UK charts!1993 was the year in which 'SFX' graced us with Lemmings. It's tricky to actually make out the source tune underneath all the insincere rap, thumping dance beats and liberally placed samples ("Let's go!"), but I guess that since Lemmings didn't really have much in the way of it's own music, this is from Lemmings 2: The Tribes. Which would explain why there's a bridge that slows down with a bagpipe-like drone. Inspiring musical genius there, SFX. Well done.
1994 was not to be outdone however, with a blistering entry called 'Street Fighter' courtesy of a dude calling himself 'The World Warrior'. I want to make fun of that name, but honestly I think pseudonyms are a pretty good idea when you're doing something as embarrassing as a Street Fighter II single. Once again featuring heavy use of game samples as well as an awful set of rap lyrics ("I won't quit 'cos I'm a Street Fighter!"), this song takes the main intro theme of Street Fighter II and makes it funky - mostly by playing the Character Select sound effect every few bars. But just when you think it's all so predictable, the World Warrior mixes it up with a breakdown into Ken's theme at 1:55, turning what should be an epic failure into a partially redeemable failure.
I also found a full length version of the Rainbow theme tune by a group called Telltale. I thought it was trippy enough just as the intro to the TV program, but the rest of the song is like they pumped the writer full of chemicals and told him to write the rest of the song while he was seeing rainbows everywhere. It's bizzare, but strangely nostalgic. I loved Rainbow as a child. That and Thomas the Tank Engine were the first TV programmes I remember seeing in colour. Wasn't there a Zippy and George single a while back? "Zippy really likes it, Zippy really likes it!" "He's loving it loving it loving it, he's loving it like George!"
Something else to look for, I guess.
